Zone Contractors assisted with the M4 Smart Motorway Project, a major initiative designed to upgrade and improve the 32 miles of motorway between Junction 3 and Junction 12.

This project was the largest Smart Motorway project at the time and required the erection of 11 new bridges along this stretch of road. Additionally, the project required the installation of new electronic messaging signs, traffic sensors, and CCTV cameras to monitor traffic flow and provide updated information to drivers.

Along with the technological benefits, the M4 Smart Motorway Project was designed to help reduce congestion through an increase in capacity achieved by converting the hard shoulder into a fourth lane and the addition of a fifth lane between junctions 4 and 4b. The M4 carries an average of 130,000 vehicles every single day.

As an experienced labour agency for the highway sector, we were contacted about the project by Balfour Beatty VINCI to assist in labour supply for multiple necessary positions. The project also required a fleet of vehicles for completion, so Zone Contractors also supported with plant hire.

We were able to provide the client with a range of experienced and qualified supervision staff and blue-collar workers to assist with the project, overlooking and undertaking crucial construction tasks.

We also provided several road sweepers and lorry loaders on a hired basis. Zone Contractors undertook various initiatives on the project to provide social value to the communities being affected by the project, specifically within neighbouring towns and villages.
